What Will Apple's 'Showtime' Feature?

If there's ever been a relative lull in iPod announcements, it's now. So next week would be good timing for Apple to introduce new players. For one, analysts say it gets products in distribution well ahead of the holiday shopping season; also, the back-to-school crowd is in full swing, ready to buy the latest gadgets to show off to friends...
A Goldman Sachs report speculates that Apple is likely to roll out higher capacity replacements for the nano and Shuffle iPods. There could also be a new video iPod in conjunction with new video offerings (movie downloads) at the Apple iTunes online store.

Microsoft's Zune Not Likely to Doom iPod

Like most other vendors, Microsoft has created an iPod-look for its rival player, but chosen not to add the scrolling clickwheel. American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu says he is unimpressed by Zune's fake clickwheel, which "does not scroll nor is touch-pressure sensitive, making navigation difficult, particularly for users with large music, video and photo libraries."

CNETAfter years of cranking out hit iPod models, has Apple Computer hit a wall? The company hasn't had a significant update to its product line this year, with the only change being the addition of a smaller-capacity 1GB iPod Nano in February.
"It's possible that we're at a point where the path to taking the next step is less clear and less straightforward, even for a company with the technology expertise and creativity of Apple," said IDC analyst Susan Kevorkian.

Analysts say the online holdouts — including the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Garth Brooks, Radiohead and Kid Rock — probably can't avoid iTunes forever as fans flock to the Internet to buy music.
Apple retains huge lead in music player market
MacworldApple continued to lead the U.S. digital music player market in the second quarter with a 75.6 percent share, according to the NPD Group.
“Apple has done a great job of focusing consumers’ attention on digital music in their products through millions of dollars in advertising,” said Ross Rubin, analyst at the NPD Group.
