iPodsNew device from Silicon Valley based start up is designed to copy CDs directly to an iPod without the need for a computer and iTunes.

I'm not sure why you'd want to use an iPod without iTunes -- the smart playlist feature is worth it alone, not to mention the overall easy music management. I guess this is aimed at people who have an iPod but no computer...

It's a temporary thing," McNealy said at a panel discussion.

Google Maps on iPod Photo

Lifehacker
iPodIf you have an iPod Photo, here is a tutorial on adding Google Maps images to your iPod... Sometimes the high level print out isn’t detailed enough (as I learned this past weekend when my Google Map + direction got me very, very lost) and you need a more step-by-step mapping sequence. Something like this can come in very handy for that and this how-to makes it pretty simple.

The tutorial is for Mac, but should work just fine for Windows as well.

Subscription vs. piecemeal pricing of music

a.wholelottanothing.org
iTunesThis week I actually suggested to someone that they avoid an iPod and instead buy something from Creative or iRiver. I know, I was shocked to hear myself say "well if you want unlimited music, no version of an iPod will work with that."

Here's the weird part -- at first I only suggested avoiding the iPod because they wanted to use Rhapsody, but the more I think about it, choosing to go with an unlimited music service seems like a smarter choice. I was glad to see Chris Anderson, editor of WIRED, talk about this last week as well.

Tip: 'Never Played' Smart Playlist

tipThere are a lot of songs on my 40GB iPod that I have yet to listen to. I feel bad that there are songs on it -- favorite songs, songs I haven't heard in months or years -- that never get a listen, while oddly enough other songs seem to come up once a week.

I solved this little problem by creating a playlist that will list all the songs I've never listened to. In iTunes, select File > New Smart Playlist. Select "PlayCount" from the first popup menu. Keep "is" as the second menu's selection and enter "0" in the box next to it:

screen shot 1

Any songs in your iTunes library that have never been played are now listed in your new Smart Playlist. Any song you listen to on your iPod will automatically be removed from the playlist when you sync, and new songs added to your library will appear in this playlist.

iPod: The new public access?

UPI
iPodI have to admit that I've never been a fan of Apple's iPod -- for reasons too numerous to mention in this story -- but Apple has finally added the killer feature to its ubiquitous, market-dominating MP3 player: video. Sure, the company is late to the portable "media center" game, but unlike its competitors, Apple actually got it right. The picture is simply amazing, and it's opened the doors for independent producers to start dreaming about this new alternative way to distribute their content. While Apple seems focused on making mainstream "repurposed" broadcast network programming its focus, it's the independent producers who really seem keen on the idea of taking advantage of the platform.

DVD to iPod made easy

Macworld
iPodIf you’ve got a 5th-generation iPod (“with video”), one of the things you probably want to do is put movies on it. After all, despite the small screen, movies really do look great on the iPod, and it’s a lot easier to carry around than a laptop or portable DVD player.

The problem is that commercial DVDs are copy-protected, which means you can’t “rip” them in iTunes as you can a music CD. So you need a special tool that removes this copy protection as it extracts the video content; if that tool can then convert the video to a format suitable for playback on your iPod, even better.

Step 1 was to make my movies bookmarkable so that when I played them I could take up where I last left off.

Step 2 was to concoct a scheme for automatically removing movies from the playlist after I’d watched them.
