Like a random royale with cheese

A Whole Lotta Nothing
iPod shuffleI've been using an iPod in [my car] since I drove it off the dealer's lot. I noticed recently however, I prefer using my iPod shuffle over my 20Gb iPod.

I know it's less music and even less information about that music, but the shuffle mode beats the standard iPod shuffle mode. When I autofill my shuffle randomly from iTunes, I have it pick high rated songs more often, so when it plays, it's not a completely random sampling of my gigs of music like the full sized iPod, it's actually random music plus a bunch of songs I love.

The rise and rise of shuffle mode

City of Sound
iPod shuffleWe usually worry about enabling control. Here, control is reduced to the absolute minimum. Stick your iPod Shuffle in the side of your Mac for a slurp of music and power, then walk away with a randomly selected music mix drifting across your ears.

It's important to remember how new this way of listening is. Shuffling across thousands of songs suddenly becomes an utterly compelling experience. Here's a device built principally for shuffle mode first, with sequential listening second. Again, a shift from the 'grown-up' iPod, where shuffle is a preference tucked behind a menu.

iPod shuffle's 'next' button size

Interconnected
iPod shuffleMy 40Gb iPod has been ousted by a new 1Gb iPod shuffle... [B]t the button placement puts the iPod "look" above the interaction design. To explain: if you're listening to songs blind, you really need two functions: next, and play/stop. Finding the next track button at the moment requires knowing the orientation of the player which isn't always easy: it should be larger.

Major Hangups Over The iPod Phone

BusinessWeek
AppleA frustrated Edward J. Zander, Motorola's chief executive, stood before a roomful of analysts and reporters and said the handset's debut would have to wait. Why? Zander said Motorola and Apple want to hold off until the phone is closer to hitting store shelves. But three industry sources say a lack of support from such giant cellular operators as Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless was instrumental in delaying the unveiling. So far the wireless companies are reluctant to promote the Motorola-Apple phone.

Video iPod likely by 2006

VNUNet.com
AppleA multimedia version of the iPod with a video iTunes store could be available by next year, according to two financial analysts with UBS Investment Research.

The analysts maintain that Apple is monitoring how consumers receive the video playing features in Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP). If consumers accept the PSP as a video playing device, it would validate the market for a multimedia version of the iPod.

iPod tunes for the freewheelin' George Bush

News.com
iPodBush has had his iPod since July, when he received it from his twin daughters as a birthday gift. He has some 250 songs on it, a paltry number compared to the 10,000 selections it can hold. Bush, as leader of the free world, does not take the time to download the music himself; that task falls to his personal aide, Blake Gottesman, who buys individual songs and albums from the iTunes music store.

As for an analysis of Bush's playlist, Joe Levy of Rolling Stone started out with this: "One thing that's interesting is that the president likes artists who don't like him."

Chaos with a side of order

A Whole Lotta Nothing
iPod shuffle"I finally figured out how to use an iPod shuffle in both predictable and unpredictable ways. A couple weeks ago I took a flight and I wanted to listen to 10 tracks that made up a short audiobook, but then load up the rest of my shuffle with 150 songs to listen to during other parts of the trip. The problem was, I couldn't figure out how to load certain tracks at the beginning, and play just those in order, while still being able to switch to random and fast forwarding through the occasional audiobook track amid the music mix. It's not that hard to accomplish, but there are a few sticking points I figured I'd share."

Review: Apple iPod Photo

CNET Reviews
iPod photoEditor's Rating: 9.0 out of 10 (excellent)

Thanks to a much lower price and a new, photographer-friendly feature, the latest version of the iPod Photo should get more than its share of looks. Offering a full-color, 16-bit screen as well as 30GB and 60GB capacities, the iPod Photo displays photos and album art in an interface that's undeniably Apple. From the ease with which one loads photos on to the device to the browsing of thumbnails and images on the iPod itself, the overall experience is positive and warm.
