The iPod rates with sliced bread

Bob LeVitus, Houston Chronicle
iPod photoI've said it before and will say it again -- the iPod is a life-changing device...

I just received an iPod photo, and if I loved my iPod before, I really love it now. The new iPod photo stores not only your songs, but also your digital pictures.

The 2-inch color display is the best little color display I've seen, and I've heard many remarks about its clarity and rich, saturated images. Photos look amazing, and iPod photo stores and displays album art for songs which have cover art available.

To Know Me, Know My iPod

New York Times
iPodSomehow, I had ended up inside of Ken's head -- in Kenworld.

Kenneth Chang is a colleague who recently sold me his iPod. After just a few months, he needed one with more storage.

After buying the slightly scuffed block of plastic and metal, I was ready to load my songs. But then I stopped. Ken had left more than 3,000 songs on the iPod, and a quick scroll through them showed that there were a lot I didn't own, and many artists I'd never listened to.

And so I listened...

Protecting your iPod

iPodsYou can always take the traditional route for protective cases for your iPod (see some examples here). But depending on how you look at things, now you either have plenty of options, or things are out of hand:

Apple is releasing iPod Socks in December. If you don't want to spend $29 for "footwear" for your iPod, you can get a felt iPod cozy instead for $20. Or, make your own iPod "superCase" for free...

One more: plan on going swimming with your iPod mini? Neither are we, but just in case, you can get waterproof housing for it.

Review : Apple iPod Photo 60GB Model

The Gadgeteer
iPod Photo
I’ve been a music fan since age zero, and a digital music and photography buff for several years now. Being a full-time computer nerd, the concept of digitizing music and photos into a format that could be carried around on a disk just amazes me.

Why iPod's Tune Won't Change

MacNewsWorld
iPodsMicrosoft and rival digital music players aren't going to take the iPod's title anytime soon. First, iPods aren't PCs: they're consumer electronics items. Microsoft won the operating system "war" because in the 1980s companies buying PCs wanted IBM or compatible machines (because then buying IBM was the "keep your job even if it all goes wrong" option).

iPod Nation?

Tufts Daily
iPodsSince Apple first introduced the iPod in October 2001, the small white cords hanging from the ears of passersby have become ubiquitous...

Such a sudden cultural phenomenon is rare but explainable. According to Newsweek's article, music is very intertwined with people's emotions, "and the purchase of something that opens up one's entire music collection ... makes for an intense relationship."

Tufts Associate Professor of Anthropology David Guss said that the iPod is so successful because it "empower[s] people to become more than simply passive consumers. iPod and other systems create new circuitries in which consumers are also producers."

U2 Talk iPod Strategy

Rolling Stone
iPodThe members of U2 are passionate proponents of Apple's iPod -- "It's the most interesting art object since the electric guitar in terms of music," says Bono -- but the band's new partnership with Apple Computer still qualifies as a surprise. In their twenty-five-year history, U2 have never licensed their music for commercial use or even accepted tour sponsorship.

Elegant Bose SoundDock Broadcasts Your iPod's Music

PC World
iPodsSpeaker system is easy to install and has quality sound.

Bose has recently joined the fray with its $300 SoundDock speaker system, which uses the now-familiar dock connector base for iPod connectivity. Featuring a glossy white body and a large, full-face metal grille, the SoundDock is a good aesthetic match for full-size iPods (and even silver iPod minis) with an attractive but simple appearance that won't dominate your decor.

Sizing Up the Latest iPod Iteration

Walt Mossberg/Wall Street Journal
iPod PhotoLast week, Apple released a souped-up version of its wildly popular iPod called the iPod Photo. Unlike earlier iPods, this new model has a vivid color screen and can store and display up to 25,000 photos. It retains the usual music storage and playback functions as well. You can view your photos on the iPod itself or on the screen of any TV that's handy, using a clever cable that comes with the new iPod.

Our verdict: The iPod Photo was just as easy, and satisfying, to use with photos as it is with music.

Analysts agree with Jobs on iPod strategy

MacCentral
iPodJobs was adamant during his address on Tuesday that video -- the technology that so many rumors swirled around -- was not the right direction for the iPod. One reason Jobs brought up as an upside for turning to photos was that "there are no copyright issues, you already own them." The devices that do support video are larger allowing for a screen big enough to view a movie, which makes them less mobile.

"There will always be those who think that gadgets like the iPod should have Swiss-army-knife functionality, but I agree with Steve Jobs, it is not the right form factor for video," said Tim Deal, Technology Business Research analyst.

Steve Jobs: "Order Christmas iPods now"

MacWorld
iPodsResponsible for a significant proportion of Apple's decade high profit in the last quarter, and now the biggest seller of all Apple products, iPod stocks might not meet Christmas demand. Despite assurances that Apple is churning out more iPods than ever, Jobs is concerned that demand might outstrip supply in the run up to Christmas.

At the opening of a new mini retail store in Palo Alto, California he said: "We've taken our best guess, and we're building a lot, but the demand may be even larger. So if you want to be sure to get an iPod this holiday season, I'd get one soon."
